A GROUP of young athletes from the Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) enjoyed a fun-filled basketball session organised by Shooting Stars and Fitness Zone last Saturday in conjunction with the International Charity Day that falls in the month of September.

The session was conducted by Shooting Stars’ head coach, Ken Han with the aim of making basketball fun, simple and adaptable for special needs athletes.

The organisers also hoped that the session would encourage more special needs people to take up the sport.

Meanwhile, the Adaptive Fitness Programme for SOBD members and athletes will be launched on September 26 at Fitness Zone Kiulap.

The programme will be conducted by Rachael Lee, a Fitness Zone trainer and a member of Shooting Star’s coaching team, who said, “I am hoping for a good feedback and response in order to extend the programme to other non-profit organisations.”

The programme’s mission is to assist the SOBD in identifying special needs athletes for participation in future international games by focusing on the physical fitness and fundamental movements that are required to perform better in sports, she added.

Dawn Lee, the Volunteer Director from SOBD, said that basketball can help the special needs children develop their teamwork and, more importantly, social interaction skills as they play and interact with the volunteers.

She added that the activity can also raise the awareness of inclusion and respect for special needs people.

More information on the SOBD can be found on its social media page.

Conducted by Shooting Stars and Fitness Zone, it is usually held on two Sundays of a month but the session on Saturday was to celebrate International Charity Day.

Shooting Stars coach Ken Han said that he aims to keep basketball fun, simple and adaptable for special athletes, hoping to boost even more participation in the coming months.

According to a press release, the Adaptive Fitness Programme will be launched on Sept 26 to mark a charitable programme conducted by Rachael Lee, Fitness Zone trainer and member of Shooting Star coaching team.

It will be by invitation only and will be a grassroots pilot scheme for SOBD members and athletes.

“I’m hoping for a good feedback and response from Adaptive Fitness Programme in order to extend this programme further to other non-profit organisations,” said Lee.

“The mission of this programme is to assist SOBD in recruiting potential special athletes with intellectual disabilities for desired sports participation in future international games,” she added.

FIFTEEN local artistes will showcase their talents at a charity high-tea concert based on the theme ‘Tender Care: Vibrant Health for Quality Life’ scheduled for September 13, from 2pm to 5.30pm at the Indera Samudra Grand Hall of The Empire Hotel & Country Club.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Siti Kaprawi, the Event Manager who is also an Executive Committee member of the Women Graduates Association – which is hosting the event – said, the two-hour event will feature Fakhrul Razi, Maria Grace Koh (Eia), Aziz Harun, Ju Ju, Hani S, Flora and Zoe as well as performances from the Artemyst dance crew and a Fitness Zone team.

Siti Kaprawi said the event aims to raise funds for underprivileged families, especially for their children as well as creating a nutrition-sensitive education programme.

Tickets are priced at $100 per person or $1,000 per table (10 people). The response so far has been very encouraging and so far 50 tables have been sold. In addition, buyers are entitled to a 20 per cent discount voucher from ZALORA, an online shopping fashion store and a Fitness Zone Voucher that entitles the holder to one-week free entry.

The event manager added that Wu Chun, the Managing Director of Fitness Zone is one of the main supporters of the event and is taking the opportunity to showcase his team alongside other talented individuals. Tickets are available at all The Coffee Bean Brunei outlets and at Fitness Zone.

Wu Chun said, “We need to create awareness that it is important to get good nutrition for good physical health and a healthy mind. If they want their kids to be healthy, parents should set a good example in what they are eating.

Hosts DJs Ashraff Rannil from Pelangi FM and DJ Livie from Kristal FM will help enliven the event.

“We all believe that children are the future, therefore we must care for them. It is our responsibility to create awareness and to educate the young on nutrition so that they have healthy minds and bodies that can allow them to excel in their educational pursuits for future success, for their families and Brunei,” said Siti Kaprawi.

Fitness Zone answers call to Nepal relief efforts

6 May

Sunday, May 3, 2015

IT WAS an afternoon filled with kindness and togetherness as people from all over Brunei-Muara came to Fitness Zone in Kiulap yesterday to play their part and contribute to the donation drive for victims of the recent Nepal earthquake.

The donation drive, a collaboration between The Gurkha Palace Restaurant & Catering Service and Fitness Zone, was initiated at the fitness centre in Kiulap with the Managing Director of Fitness Zone, Wu Chun, passing all donated items collected from yesterday alone to The Gurkha Palace Manager, James Shakya.

Items collected and needed for the donation drive include medical supplies, beverages, clothes, pillows, tents, blankets, sleeping bags, torches, dry food and all sorts of items except for money.

Speaking about the collaboration and the public’s response, Wu Chun said: “As there was no collection point in Bandar, we tried to offer them our place and the result is so overwhelming. There are two more trucks full of things and we are out of space to put it so we encourage them to bring it directly to their warehouse for today. There have been about five trucks already altogether.”

“We are liaising with the British Gurkha Camp so the process is we collect and pack everything and bring it to the British camp there. The reason why we’re doing this is because the army can’t ask for help from the public so Gurkha Palace will be representing them,” said Shakya.

“We are really thankful to Wu Chun for helping us do this because initially we hoped to make a collection point at the camp but they had some protocol issues. We are also really thankful to the people of Brunei because what we’re getting is way more than what we expected. People have been calling us and asking what it is we need and saying that whatever it is we need, they will bring it for us,” the manager added.

Fitness Zone and The Gurkha Palace will be collecting the donations until May 8 at both branches of Fitness Zone in Kiulap and Serusop, from 9am to 4pm.

As for those who wish to donate in Kuala Belait, they may do so by dropping their donations at The Gurkha Palace Restaurant and Catering Service or The Gurkha Jewellery.

For more information, call Fitness Zone at 2232338 for the Kiulap branch or 2248488 for the Serusop branch and 3221474, 3222714 or 8744714 for The Gurkha Palace Restaurant and The Gurkha Jewellery.
