26 Feb

Thursday, February 25, 2016

MORE than 100 Fitness Zone members and members of the public yesterday joined the fitness club in marking World Cancer Day by combating calories at a two-hour workout.

The Combat Cancer event was held at the fitness centre’s multi-purpose hall and was conducted by its Le Mills certified Body Combat Instructors together with a guest presenter from popular health club centre Fitness First, who is also a professional Body Combat instructor, Mark Bautista.

Present at the event to show support was Fitness Zone’s Managing Director Wu Chun and General Manager Del Mesina Alfaro who also enthusiastically joined the crowd.

In a press statement, Wu Chun said, “On behalf of Fitness Zone, we are really happy that a lot of people turned up. After the success of our recent blood donation drive and recent events, it inspired our team to strive harder not only to educate Bruneians on how important a healthy lifestyle is but also to inform the public that prevention is better than cure. We have to decide to take charge and full responsibility of our good health now or else it’s too late!”

The managing director was also present during the annual staff party, which was held the day before. The fitness centre on National Day closed its doors in respect for the special occasion, and took the opportunity to have a fun time on cruise tour of the Brunei River.

Fitness Zone has a number of upcoming events, which includes a Konga event that is slated to take place on March 4 in collaboration with The Jungle Body Malaysia. Konga, in a press statement is an extreme mash-up of boxing, dance, cardio and toning using very hip and upbeat music. SIXTY-TWO pints of blood were collected yesterday during the blood donation drive dubbed ‘Circulate Love, Donate Blood’ organised by Fitness Zone (FZ) and supported by the Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC).

The event, which was held at the centre’s studio 1 room, saw the participation of FZ members, its staff and members of the public, who were enthusiastic to donate their share of blood for a good cause.

Held in commemoration of the International Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Day this month, it was the first blood donation drive held by FZ this year. The donated blood will benefit patients with open heart surgery, cancer and stroke.

The public relations officer of FZ, Shelley Busque, who is also the executive assistant of FZ founder Wuchun, said that every helping hand towards charity will make a difference. “The blood donation drive turned out well, and we at Fitness Zone are glad (of the result), she said. MORE than 50 pints of blood were collected at a blood donation drive yesterday, jointly organised by Fitness Zone (FZ) and the Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC).

The event, which carried the theme of ‘Circulate Love, Give Blood’, was held at the Kiulap branch of Fitness Zone from 2pm to 5pm.

“There were at least 26 members who pledged and registered as donors; and more than 28 from the general public,” said Shelley Busque, the public relations officer of Fitness Zone.

Romeo Tabios, a nurse at the JPMC Blood Bank said, “Every drop of your blood counts. When you donate blood, you give back to the society; it also provides physical and mental benefits to the donor’s health.”

Meanwhile, FZ is inviting the public to join the ‘Combat Cancer 2016’ Les Mills Body Combat programme, on February 24, to mark International Cancer Day.

PADUKA Seri Begawan Sultan Science College’s (Maktab Sains) will continue its fitness programme at Fitness Zone this year, following an agreement that was signed between both parties recently.

“Our co-curriculum activities (CCA) have been conducted in Fitness Zone for three consecutive years now,” said Hj Farid, representative from Maktab Sains and Freestyle cycling instructor at Fitness Zone.

“We have trust in Fitness Zone for their guidance and giving proper knowledge on fitness, most of the students from our previous CCA activities actually became members of the health club and successfully adopted fitness into their daily lives at such a young age, and some even shared that it has helped them in their school academics” he added.

This year, the CCA programme will be participated by 70 students and three guardians from the school in each session.

During the course of the programme, the participants will be engaged in different physical activities.

“Brunei is the place where I grew up in – the country is dear to me, so one of the ways I try to give back to community is by being a positive influence and trying to make an impact to the younger generation. I honestly believe that by focusing and starting with the youth, giving them quality education and wellness in terms of good health, will be beneficial for their productivity in schools or colleges as a way for them to cope with the challenges that life would bring in the future. And, if the younger ones are healthy and happy they will excel not only with their studies but with whatever they do and hopefully this will mold them to be good and happy citizens,” Managing Director of Fitness Zone Wu Chun was quoted as saying in a statement.

His assistant, Shelly Busque, said that the centre aimed to increase the students’ confidence in terms of being physically active, on top of providing them with proper knowledge on the importance of wellness.

The CCA activities will take place at the fitness and health club every Thursday.

Fitness Zone offers an affordable student membership package to encourage youth to excel not only in academic field but also in the field of fitness and health as well as various programmes for young children, such as its special ballet classes, licensed with the Royal Academy of Dance.
