MORE than 30 individuals with intellectual disabilities paired up with able people to showcase their athletic abilities at the third Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day celebration yesterday.

The sixth Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day global celebration commemorates the founder of the Special Olympics movement, Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

This year’s celebration was held at the Multi-purpose Hall of the Fitness Zone centre in Kiulap and was supported by Fitness Zone, Shooting Stars Brunei, Easy Way, Bake Culture and Just Juz.

Also present to support the event was the Filipino Basketball Association.

“This is the third celebration this year for SOBD, celebrating acceptance and unity, and we do it by holding unified sports events,” said the Secretary General of SOBD, Wati Hj Bujang, who was there to launch the event.

She added that such events would help develop the athlete’s courage, confidence, help them make friends, and show that even those that with disabilities can contribute as well.

This year’s unified sports event was basketball, and each SOBD athlete was paired with an able person.

They ran through four stations where their skills in dribbling, shooting, passing and running were tested.

A GROUP of young athletes from the Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) enjoyed a fun-filled basketball session organised by Shooting Stars and Fitness Zone last Saturday in conjunction with the International Charity Day that falls in the month of September.

The session was conducted by Shooting Stars’ head coach, Ken Han with the aim of making basketball fun, simple and adaptable for special needs athletes.

The organisers also hoped that the session would encourage more special needs people to take up the sport.

Meanwhile, the Adaptive Fitness Programme for SOBD members and athletes will be launched on September 26 at Fitness Zone Kiulap.

The programme will be conducted by Rachael Lee, a Fitness Zone trainer and a member of Shooting Star’s coaching team, who said, “I am hoping for a good feedback and response in order to extend the programme to other non-profit organisations.”

The programme’s mission is to assist the SOBD in identifying special needs athletes for participation in future international games by focusing on the physical fitness and fundamental movements that are required to perform better in sports, she added.

Dawn Lee, the Volunteer Director from SOBD, said that basketball can help the special needs children develop their teamwork and, more importantly, social interaction skills as they play and interact with the volunteers.

She added that the activity can also raise the awareness of inclusion and respect for special needs people.

More information on the SOBD can be found on its social media page.

FIFTEEN local artistes will showcase their talents at a charity high-tea concert based on the theme ‘Tender Care: Vibrant Health for Quality Life’ scheduled for September 13, from 2pm to 5.30pm at the Indera Samudra Grand Hall of The Empire Hotel & Country Club.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Siti Kaprawi, the Event Manager who is also an Executive Committee member of the Women Graduates Association – which is hosting the event – said, the two-hour event will feature Fakhrul Razi, Maria Grace Koh (Eia), Aziz Harun, Ju Ju, Hani S, Flora and Zoe as well as performances from the Artemyst dance crew and a Fitness Zone team.

Siti Kaprawi said the event aims to raise funds for underprivileged families, especially for their children as well as creating a nutrition-sensitive education programme.

Tickets are priced at $100 per person or $1,000 per table (10 people). The response so far has been very encouraging and so far 50 tables have been sold. In addition, buyers are entitled to a 20 per cent discount voucher from ZALORA, an online shopping fashion store and a Fitness Zone Voucher that entitles the holder to one-week free entry.

The event manager added that Wu Chun, the Managing Director of Fitness Zone is one of the main supporters of the event and is taking the opportunity to showcase his team alongside other talented individuals. Tickets are available at all The Coffee Bean Brunei outlets and at Fitness Zone.

Wu Chun said, “We need to create awareness that it is important to get good nutrition for good physical health and a healthy mind. If they want their kids to be healthy, parents should set a good example in what they are eating.

Hosts DJs Ashraff Rannil from Pelangi FM and DJ Livie from Kristal FM will help enliven the event.

“We all believe that children are the future, therefore we must care for them. It is our responsibility to create awareness and to educate the young on nutrition so that they have healthy minds and bodies that can allow them to excel in their educational pursuits for future success, for their families and Brunei,” said Siti Kaprawi.

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday attended the 10th National Youth Day celebration held at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

Upon his arrival, His Majesty accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik, was greeted by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah.

The National Youth Day is celebrated annually on August 1 and this year’s celebration is based on the theme of ‘Visionary Youths Empower the Economy’.

In his opening speech, the minister said the theme is a call to the youth to intensify their efforts and involvement in increasing the country’s prosperity by developing its economy by being a productive work force.

“The theme not only emphasises for the youth to be productive but also to be more creative and innovative in exploring the field of economy and occupation. These advantages can make them the driving force for community advancement and national development that is sustainable.”

He added that youth have managed to stand out domestically in showcasing their leadership potential through their involvement in regional and international meetings and conventions, volunteer work and their concern for the less fortunate members of society in the country and beyond its burdens abroad. This was all made possible with support, encouragement and guidance from the government and private sectors.

The event then continued with the reading of the youth pledge by representatives of the National Service Programme, youths from other uniformed groupings from all four districts, Dai’e’s, prospective participants for the 42nd Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme, members of athletic teams and the national sports association as well as volunteer groups.

The pledge was led by Mohd Shafique bin Haji Mohd Hussain, a young entrepreneur who started the Start-Up Hub BIMP-EAGA in Brunei Darussalam. This was followed by a poetry recital, a human LED performance involving 1,074 students, a sketch performed by 254 students based on the rice cultivation industry and the usage of heavy machinery, scaffolding and abseiling.

After the announcement of award recipients, the monarch presented awards to this year’s category winners: Youth Association Award, Meritorious Youth Leader Award, Voluntary Youth Award and Excellent Youth Award.

His Majesty then proceeded to tour the innovation exhibition at the Indoor Stadium’s concourse.
