We wanted to donate the tickets to the orphans and participants from counselling class at Pusat Bahagia Tutong for an opportunity to share the laughter and unique experience at the expo.”

He also revealed that his father Goh Kim Thiam has also been carrying out charitable activities in Tutong, a place which was close to his family’s heart because Wu Chun’s late mother taught at a school in the Tutong District in the 70s.

Fitness Zone & IGS College blood donation runs the extra mile

WU CHUN yesterday joined students of the International Graduate School (IGS) College in bleeding for a good cause at a blood donation drive and ‘Dance for Charity’ session co-organised by the college and Fitness Zone for the first time, at the gym’s branch in Kiulap.

According to a Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) blood bank nurse, Romeo, JPMC continues to create awareness on the significance of donating blood and increasing the blood bank’s supplies by actively participating in donation drives.

“It is important for donors to understand that these donations not only help patients, but also the donors themselves in terms of increasing health benefits,” he added.

The objectives of the donation drive were to raise awareness and replenish blood bank’s supplies.

Wu Chun said, “If you donate money, you give food. If you donate blood, you give life. We need both to give hope to this world. We don’t have to be superman to save lives and in fact, one pint of blood can save up to three lives. I remember coming across a quote from Winston Churchill, who said, ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. All it costs is a little love and we can all be a hero in our own way.’

“Changing life through fitness is our gym’s slogan but we want to go further than that. We hope to inspire the community, especially teenagers, to develop a generous spirit, a desire to give back to their community and cultivate an awesome habit of helping others.

“Fitness Zone is going the extra mile by giving out free one-week access to our health clubs for those who prove that they have donated blood in any local blood donation activity.

“A strong willingness to make a difference is what we hope to achieve from this campaign.

“If you are deterred from donating blood, we still need you. Organise a blood drive, ask others to donate or be a volunteer at blood drives. You play a big part by helping those in need.”

Following the blood donation, certified instructors conducted a Zumba and Les Mills ‘SH’BAM’ dance session in the afternoon. Entry stood at $2 for the two-hour session, with all proceeds to be given to charity.

College’s support for community

1 Feb

Friday, January 30, 2015

IT WAS all blood and sweat for a good cause yesterday for students of the International Graduate Studies College (IGS) as they held a blood donation drive and a two-hour dance session for charity.

The event was organised by the degree students of the college in collaboration with the Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) at the Kiulap branch of health and fitness centre Fitness Zone.

Present as guest of honours at the event were the CEO and Chairman of IGS Hjh Fatimah PSJ Pg Hj Abd Momin and CEO of Fitness Zone, Wu Chun, who also took part in the blood donation drive. Wu Chun, who was donating blood for the seventh time, said in encouragement to others, “For all the people who are thinking about doing it, I would say to just do it. I think it’s really cool to donate blood. You’re saving lives and that’s what we hope to encourage, for the young to start donating. You’re giving back to the community and your contribution doesn’t have to just be in monetary terms.”

“I actually get a little scared when I see the big needle and it does hurt a little bit, but it’s something very meaningful so I try to push myself to do it at least twice a year,” he admitted, during the process. Chun also added that Fitness Zone is having a lifetime promotion of giving out free one-week passes to all individuals who donate their blood, as long as proof is provided. The $2 entrance fee collected from the dance session, which included zumba and Les Mills SH’BAM by certified instructors, will be donated to charity. For those who are interested in donating, feel free to visit level one of the JPMC Laboratory Blood Donation, located in Jerudong.
