THE Ministry of Health (MoH) yesterday renewed its ‘win win’ partnership with Fitness Zone through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony to continue working together on MOH’s Healthy Lifestyle Clinic programme and Physical Activities programme. The event took place at Fitness Zone Kiulap.

The partnership between MoH and Fitness Zone has been in the running for five years, with more than 2,000 individuals participating in the Healthy Lifestyle Clinic programme. The programme helps individuals lose weight based on practising a healthy lifestyle, such as through eating healthy food, exercise and fostering a positive mindset.

The programme has helped many individuals lose an average of one to two kilogrammes a month, or five to 10 per cent of their original body weight, within 12 weeks. The success rate for the 2014 cohort is more than 40 per cent.

The guest of honour who witnessed the signing was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil.

Signing on behalf of MOH was Dr Ernina Nidszarinah binti Haji Abd Rani, senior medical officer at the Health Promotion Centre, witnessed by Dr Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Md Kassim, the Acting Director General, while Wu Chun as the Managing Director of Fitness Zone signed on the dotted line, witnessed by Citadel Alfaro, the General Manager of Fitness Zone.

Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila, during an interview with media, highlighted, “The partnership between MOH and Fitness Zone has made our programmes better. Fitness Zone, with its expertise and facilities, can help MOH to improve the effectiveness of the programmes.”

Wu Chun added, “The important fact is that the participants change their lifestyle by working hard and exercising, and continue on with the programme themselves.

“I hope that the participants will also influence their friends or family members to practice a healthy lifestyle by spreading the news on its benefits. One of the new focuses this year is that we will teach participants to cook more healthy dishes.”

With an increasing number of people practicing a healthy lifestyle, Wu Chun hopes that it will reduce the burden of healthcare cost on the country and reduce cases of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila also cited His Majesty’s 2015 new year’s titah, whereby His Majesty raised concerns on obesity and pointed out that the level of health in Brunei is still worrying, mentioning that there has been instances where children under the age of five have been found to be obese. This may be caused by, among others, inadequate intake of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables. She also hopes to increase the level of Public Private Partnership (PPP) in promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Following the signing, Wu Chun and Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila officially launched Fitness Zone’s new Functional Training room. Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila also tried out some of the basic functional training exercises, guided by Fitness Zone Instructor Darren Chai.

FITNESS Zone together with The Energy Kitchen and FC Phosphor  put smiles on faces of special needs children at Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam in a celebration to mark the International Day of People with Disability.

Disability Day, or International Day of People with Disability, has been promoted by the United Nations since 1992. The aim is to encourage better understanding of people affected by a disability, making people more aware of the rights, dignity and welfare of disabled people as well as raise awareness about the benefits of integrating disabled persons into every aspect of life – from economic to political, social and cultural.

According to Fitness Manager of Fitness Zone, Racheal Lee, “Disability is not inability! I am a strong believer in reaching out and giving back to the community. To be able to acknowledge International Day of People with Disability serves as a year-end blessing for both Fitness Zone and us. Being active in the health and fitness industry, it is equally important and satisfying for me to share and educate people with disability in Brunei on how to stay fit and healthy.”

The guest of honour was Pg Datin Hjh Noraini PDNLD Pg Hj Abd Momin, Executive/Operational Trustee of Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al Hajjah Maryam.

To commemorate the occasion, representatives from Fitness Zone, Pusat Ehsan, The Energy Kitchen and FC Phosphor held a certificate signing ceremony.

After the ceremony, Fitness Zone’s certified instructors, Lovely and Sam, conducted a group exercise for 28 members of Pusat Ehsan, while the Managing Director of FC Phosphor, Tengku Syed Herdiman bin Tenkgu Syed Abdul Rahman and his team led a mini football session.

Managing Director of Fitness Zone, Wu Chun, as the Ambassador for the International Day of People with Disability said, “Fitness Zone hopes to improve the quality of life for people with disability. Earlier this year, we conducted a seminar on how to assist people who are blind to workout in a health club. I truly think the best way for them to be part of the community is to work and play with people without the disabilities. We should give them equal chances as it helps them to learn better from role models to be a person with contributions to make.”

He added, “Look at Nick Vujicic, a person born without arms and legs but he managed to fight against his disability and become a world-renowned speaker who inspires millions of people. I strongly believe that disability does not come from the body it is the negative thoughts that disable us. The only disability in life is having a bad attitude.”

The event continued with a talent performance by some of the members of Pusat Ehsan such as dancing, singing, reading, painting and musical instrument performance.

Before concluding the fun-filled day, The Energy Kitchen team led by Executive Chef, Jason Lew, prepared special healthy lunch for the students, to spread the message on the importance of healthy food and diet.

Jason said, “We wanted to treat the students to a nice meal and introduce the idea that simple healthy cooking can be fun and delicious, too. After all, good nutrition is the foundation for good health.”
