MULTI-sport talents Darren Chai and Rachael Lee, fitness instructors from Fitness Zone, recently did Brunei proud when they emerged as champions in their respective categories at the Battle Royale Crossfit Competition 2014 that was held in Brunei Darussalam.

Darren Chai won the men’s Open category and Racheal Lee took home the winner’s trophy for the women’s Scaled category. Both individuals were also members of the Brunei national team at the recently concluded Borneo City Basketball Cup 2014.

Sharing the true complete fitness regime and training to build fit individuals or building the right muscle to cater to the needs of specific sports, Darren Chai and Rachael Lee are leading the new Functional Training Zone at Fitness Zone Kiulap.

Since he was young, Darren always had a passion for sports such as tennis, badminton, swimming, golf and kick-boxing. At the age of 16, Darren attained his qualifications in the United Kingdom (UK) to acquire his certification for personal training, functional fitness and tacfit.

Finally, in the United States, Darren Chai took up My Gym Jones qualifications where he experienced training with the team that trained actors from films such as Superman and 3OO.

Spreading his training concept, Darren introduced Hybrid Movement Training which is based on the idea of functional fitness whereby an individual will be trained with a goal in mind and condition his body to work at optimal agility, endurance and strength in every situation.

Rachael Lee who is also the Fitness Manager, Personal Trainer and Group Instructor of Fitness Zone, highlighted the importance of safety in the Functional Training.

“Fitness Zone will abide to the strict safety guideline in training,” she added.

The new Functional Training Zone has double rubber layers so that people can drop their weights if it’s too heavy to avoid injuries.

“BE INSPIRED, chase after your dreams and always remember to not let your parents down when you pursue anything in life.”

Those were some words of wisdom shared by the locally bred international artiste, Wu Chun, during one of the Faculty of Arts and Social Science’s (FASS) eminent speakers series, ‘A Date with Wu Chun – Living a Life of Endless Possibilities’.

The interactive talk was held yesterday at the ILIA building, which was facilitated by Low Kok Wai, lecturer for Drama and Theatre Studies in Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Present at the event were Dr Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah, Dean of FASS, and UBD undergraduates.

It was Wu Chun’s first time attending an interactive session with students and he hoped to continue to attend similar events to inspire and to encourage the younger generation to work hard and to give advice to the students, not only regarding the entertainment industry but also in business ventures as well as in life.

During the talk, Wu Chun recalled his first stint in acting whereby he was scolded by the director of a Taiwanese drama. “I was discovered by a producer in Taiwan when I was on vacation. With no background in acting and my command of Taiwanese Mandarin not up to par, I was given a lead role in a drama. After a few takes, the director scolded me by saying ‘Why don’t you go back to Brunei’ in front of hundreds of people which was hurtful but I managed to pick myself up and improve myself.”

At the end of shooting the drama, the director praised him for being the hardest working student he had known.

Wu Chun also shared his experience in various business ventures and talked about a book that he wrote, ‘Ignite Courage’, which has become one of the best-selling books in Taiwan.

IT WAS an intimate afternoon yesterday for more than 50 individuals as they had the chance to meet Brunei’s very own international celebrity, Wu Chun, up close at a talk presented by the star himself.

Dubbed “A date with Wu Chun — Living a life of endless possibilities”, the talk, which is the latest under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS)’s Eminent Speakers’ Series of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), was held at the Lecture Theatre Hall, Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA) of the university.

Prior to the talk, which was in the format of a talk show, the audience — comprising UBD students, students from Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre, FASS lecturers and staff as well as members of the public — were entertained with a one-minute video clip of Wu Chun.

In the talk show, the star shared his amazing journey from relative obscurity to becoming one of the well-known faces in the Chinese entertainment circle. He also talked about his ups and downs in business and the rise as one of the successful entrepreneurs in the fitness and food industries.

The event ended with a photo session and a chance to mingle with special guests and members of the press. Wu Chun’s career spans from music, television and film industries and has been an advocator for charities, fitness and volunteerism in Brunei. In addition, he has written and published a book in Taiwan called ‘Ignite Courage’. The talk series is designed to be a platform where young people in Brunei can come up close and personal with inspiring individuals who have succeeded in making a mark in their chosen fields.

The latest talk by Wun Chun is aimed at inspiring individuals to achieve success by persevering and having the courage to fulfil one’s dream.
