LOCAL filmmakers need the right support from local audience in order to promote the film industry in Brunei.

This was highlighted by international superstar Wu Chun at the short films screening in conjunction with the Film Festival UBD 2014 at The Core Residential College, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, yesterday.

Wu Chun, who is also the Event Ambassador of the Film Festival UBD 2014, applauded the local filmmakers who contributed their short films for the screening.

“I’d like to see more because I know Bruneians are quite talented,” he said, adding that some of the works (films) were “creative” and that he will be more than happy to be involved (in local films), if given the chance.

Prior to the screening, Wu Chun had the opportunity to meet local filmmakers and fans at the participating booths.

He was impressed with UBD for offering short filmmaking classes – something he thinks can be very beneficial.

“There have been a few producers who spoke to me about filming in Brunei, but we don’t have the manpower to get overseas crew to come, it is almost impossible.

“By UBD providing the platform for local filmmakers in these short courses, I believe that we might be able to get locals involved in overseas film production or vice versa,” he explained.

In view of the future of Brunei film industry, Wu Chun expects more local film makers to step forward as the industry is very new.

“It’s okay to make mistakes because that is the only way to improve. Never be afraid to try,” he advised.

A total of eight short films were screened yesterday – “Letting Go” by Solace Films, “Padah” by Affinity Production, “Roast Lamb” by Roast Lamb, “Inside the Room” by A Rapscallion Production, “Dwight: A Never-Ending Story” by Dwight, “I Wish I Had You” by Nostril Production, “A Far Away” by Tinymatt Box Production and “YES!” by Aitibi Production.

The film screening will continue today over five sessions at 10am, 11.30am, 1pm, 2.30pm and 4pm.

IT WASN’T the usual cross country flag-off yesterday for students of the Pengiran Anak Puteri Hjh Masna Secondary School as they were greeted with a pleasant surprise in the form of Brunei-born Taiwan celebrity, Wu Chun.

The celebrity, who was the guest of honour and the managing director of Fitness Zone, was greeted by excited screams at the school’s 24th Cross Country Race.

The event consisted of two categories — Above 15 and below 14 — of which both were 5km race.

Wu Chun also took the opportunity to introduce Fitness Zone to the school as a way to keep fit as the young generation is the country’s important asset.

He added that the gym instructors will make a visit to the school once a month to help guide them in the proper exercise techniques. Also present at the event was the production crew of Zhe Jiang TV Station from China, who came to the Sultanate to film the life of Wu Chun in Brunei, as well as an introduction to the nation through the celebrity’s eyes.

BRUNEI’S own megastar, Wu Chun, recently took time off from his busy schedule to attend the world’s largest watch and jewellery show, BASELWORLD 2014, in Basel, Switzerland.

Wu Chun was invited by MIDO Switzerland’s head office, of which he has been an ambassador for the past two consecutive years.

BASELWORLD 2014 showcases some of the most important watches and jewelleries in the world, as well as all the leading brands.

Some 150,000 invitees, including representatives from exhibiting companies, buyers, journalists and other visitors from every continent have demonstrated the underlining position of the event as the most important marketplace and trend-setting event for the world’s watch and jewellery industry.

In addition to attending the event, Wu Chun took the opportunity to climb Mt Jungfrau at 3,571 metres high, also known as the ‘Top of Europe’.

According to Wu Chun, “Watches have always been a symbol of status for me. Being a watch enthusiast, it certainly was a privilege to be invited to BASELWORLD 2014, one of the most exciting exhibitions in the watch industry. It’s an eye opener for me, especially having the chance to mingle with top notch watchmakers and global journalists from around 70 countries.”

He added, “Being the ambassador for MIDO watch has been really exciting for me over the years, especially after understanding the brand’s philosophies. It’s a Swiss company with close to 100 years of historic background and their spirit of aiming for perfection and creativity always inspires me.”

Founded by George Schaeren in 1918, Mido is currently based in the town of Le Locle at the heart of the Swiss Jura mountains. The name Mido comes from the Spanish words “Yo mido” or in English “I measure”.

Mido’s philosophy is to combine timeless design with functionality, rather than follow fashion trends. The objective is to create timepieces made of high quality materials, endowed with precise movements and offering outstanding water-resistance in order to last a long time.

The watches are sold through 2,500 authorised retailers in 50 countries around the world and is one of the many reputable brands under the Swatch Group.
