NORALI Ali Yusop became visually impaired when he was in his first year of sixth form. Against all odds and struggles, he overcame the challenge of being a person with disability by achieving good academic results and living a successful life. His story touched the hearts of many.

“Disabilities should be seen as a form of diversity, not deficits,” he said during a special talk at the Fitness Zone yesterday, highlighting that the person with disability does not mean that he or she is beneath everyone. He emphasised that society should adapt to people with disability, not vice versa, adding, “look at their ability and not disability”.

Norali, who is also a Ministry of Education officer, has been a Fitness Zone member since two years ago. Touched by his story, Wu Chun, the owner of Fitness Zone, recruited him as Fitness Zone’s latest brand ambassador of the “Pursue Greatness” campaign, offering him a lifetime membership.

Wu Chun said, “To me, Norali is much admired for his courage and passion to make a real difference to the society with his work. The fact that Norali has also been an active member of Fitness Zone for the past two years and is an accomplished marathon runner, making him the ideal spokesperson for the Fitness Zone.”

Some of the key learning points from the meeting included equal opportunities for people with disability and how to create an environment which is sensitive and inclusive for people with special needs.

“Pursue Greatness” is a marketing campaign headed by Fitness Zone to inspire the Bruneian public to lead a healthy lifestyle. Fitness Zone is also a supporting partner of the White Cane Charity Run organised by the National Association of the Blind on March 9.
