FAKHRUL Razi’s rise to fame since the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood this year has made him a local sensation.

As such, Fitness Zone signed the singer as its media spokesperson in its ‘Pursue Greatness’ campaign to inspire people in the country.

Describing the campaign, Wu Chun said, “As the saying goes, good is the opposite of great. We live in a hyper connected world today and to be competitive will not suffice. We need to be great. Greatness is about perseverance, excellence and making personal sacrifices. To achieve anything great, you must be physically fit to begin with. As a fitness centre, we believe Fitness Zone plays a crucial role in helping you to pursue greatness.”

Wu Chun and Fakhrul Razi share a number of similarities as both are Bruneians and singers who wish to inspire the community.

Fakhrul Razi has begun his journey to international stardom while Wu Chun has reached the pinnacle of his career.

According to Fakhrul Razi, “I have always admired Wu Chun. He is not only promoting fitness but raising awareness on a healthy lifestyle which will benefit Brunei as a whole.

“Being a long-time member of the centre, I always love the spinning and body pump at Fitness Zone. To achieve greatness, one needs to be well in mind, body and soul.”

Fakhrul Razi will be launching his new album in November. Three quarters of the songs were composed by Fakhrul himself containing Brunei’s essence. The album was recorded in Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines. On choosing Fakhrul Razi as the spokesperson of Fitness Zone, Wu Chun said, “We want a spokesperson the local community can relate to. One whose name is undisputed when relating it to the word ‘Greatness’.

“When he sings, you sense a greatness in his voice and the powerful message the lyric conveys. However, many do not realise the sacrifices and hard work that went behind the scenes. Fakhrul Razi is indeed our natural choice.”

Wu Chun ‘ignites courage’ in biography

BRUNEI’S very own international superstar, Wu Chun, has launched his first biography entitled ‘Ignite Courage’ this week.

The book, which took three years to complete, depicts the acclaimed actor’s struggles in his personal life and within the entertainment industry. He hopes to inspire individuals to strive in overcoming any obstacles to achieve their dreams and not take the good things in life for granted.

Prior to launching the book, the star officially announced his marital status and parental pride to be a father. He is a doting dad to his daughter and newborn son who was welcomed into the world last week.

The news of his marriage and children shocked fans and the entertainment industry in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong as well as Japan. However a vast majority supported his decision to come clean.

In a special interview with Wu Chun on his biography, he said, “Basically, the book covers 90 per cent of my life. It took three years to complete and it depicts my journey to fulfilling my dreams as well as the courage, happiness and failures that has made me treasure and appreciate everything in my life more.

“When I think of my life, how it all began, the struggles and things accomplished along the way, it is unbelievable, especially for a kid born in a mysterious, yet very simple and peaceful country called Brunei.

“I was a rebellious child who began driving at 14. Then basketball took over my life and I became part of the local basketball national team at 16,” Wu Chun said.

He also revealed intimate details in his book such as meeting his wife and first love at 16, getting his first tattoo at 17, the death of his best friend after a car accident at 21 and also his university life. Never-before seen pictures of the superstar are also featured in the biography.

However, the hardest moment in Wu Chun’s personal life was the passing of his mother. “Her love and responsibility towards the family especially her kind hearted spirit constantly reminded everyone around her to lend a helping hand to those in need. Thus has inspired me to be a great family man and a responsible entrepreneur.

“I feel touched by her benevolence and hopefully, I can follow in her footsteps and make a difference in this world.”

At 34, Wu Chun has gained one extraordinary lesson which is ‘Life without struggle is a life without growth’. Once I understood this, it created the ‘Positive Spark’ inside me and nothing seemed impossible. I hope this book can ignite the courage inside and inspire you to live your life to the max,” the superstar expressed.

Touching on the challenges to complete the biography, Wu Chun said, “I wrote this book in English and hired a translator to translate the book in Mandarin which was a big challenge. I changed translators thrice and personally invited two of them to Brunei.

“As this book is for charity, I try to minimise the cost of publishing which is also a big challenge. I love to explore and it is similar to setting up my business. People with big budgets can build great things. But with limited budget, great ideas can help achieve the same result as those with a larger capital. I would like to see this happen. And that is also one of the reasons I never sleep more than six hours a day during my last 15 years.

“I also directed the design artwork of this book. It proved to be a challenge given that it is my first time.”

With the launching of his biography and recent announcements, some had speculated that Wu Chun may be retiring from the entertainment industry but the star clarified this issue. “That is not entirely correct. However, my family and I make decisions based on truly what we feel at the moment. My family will remain my number one priority but I am glad that my fans had supported me along the way. Honestly, having a good family makes me feel I have nothing to lose as long as they are by my side. I will always be contented.”

The ‘Ignite Courage’ biography is currently available at Fitness Zone in Chinese. The release of the English edition will be at a later date.

WU CHUN, Brunei’s very own multi-hyphenate superstar can now add “author” to his list of accomplishments, with the launch of his self-penned biography, Ignite Courage.

A press conference was held at the new wing of Fitness Zone Kiulap on Thursday to officially launch the Mandarin-language book, which tells the story of Wu Chun’s life, from start to present.

According to Wu Chun, the book took him three years to complete.

“I was 30, and one day I woke up and just felt like writing and planning my future. I got carried away and this is the result.”

Wu Chun said that he has printed and distributed about 20,000 books, which have sold out quickly.

“The money from sales of the book will be donated to charity organisations in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. Locally, the money will be donated to a cancer organisation, which is close to my heart because my late mother was a cancer victim,” expressed Chun.

When asked about what people should expect from the book, he said, “34 years of my life.”

Ignite Courage pulls readers into Wu Chun’s world, learning about his life — the dreams, courage, excitement, happiness and failures that have transformed him into someone who truly understands what life is all about.

Wu Chun’s biggest fans will appreciate the quirky facts about the star featured in the book, which include the age he was when he first fell in love, the number of pictures in his iPhoto album, and the number of Nike Air Jordans he owns, among others.

The book also features photographs taken from Wu Chun’s personal collection.

“These pictures are all taken by me or taken for me. These are my memories and I want to share them.”

At the press conference, Wu Chun also opened up about life as a husband and a father, which is also featured in the book over two to three pages.

“This was a last minute decision. I revealed my status as being married and having children because I felt like it was time. After I announced it, it felt like a huge weight had been taken off my shoulders. This was the only thing I kept secret from my fans… now they know everything about me and it feels good.”

The English-language version of Ignite Courage will be produced in the future, so that Wu Chun can also reach out to his English-speaking fans.

Ignite Courage by Wu Chun is currently available at any Fitness Zone outlet.

He revealed that all proceeds from the sale of the book, which is estimated around $150,000, will be donated to charities in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Brunei Darussalam. In Brunei Darussalam, the proceeds will go to Yayasan Kanser Kanak-Kanak (Children with Cancer) in memory of Wu Chun’s mother who passed away from cancer.

On the response for the book after its launching, Wu Chun said, “It did surprisingly well. Twenty thousand copies were sold out within two weeks in Taiwan.”

On the eve of the book launch in Taiwan, Wu Chun came out publicly to announce that he is married with a daughter.

Despite the shocking announcement, Wu Chun not only earned the majority of his fans’ acceptance and support but also increasing endorsement deals as many felt that Wu Chun’s image has become more mature.

He also received numerous baby gifts from fans overseas that showed support and love for Wu Chun’s family and his new born son.

After the book and the announcement, Wu Chun reassured his fans that he will continue to pursue his career in the entertainment industry. He said, “Nothing has changed. I will still continue to read scripts and if there are scripts that I really love, I will still do it.”

He is taking a three-week break from filming to help out the newborn which he nicknamed “Little Chun” (not an official name). He said, “Sleepless nights and diaper changes are part of fatherhood.”

Wu Chun will go back to filming a movie, ‘Empress Yang Guifei’, in China and also a Japanese movie – second instalment of Kindaichi- in November this year.

Fakhrul also expressed that being physically fit is an integral part for any musician. In order to perform at an optimal level, having a good voice is not merely enough, you need discipline.
