THE Public Works Department (JKR), under the Ministry of Development, has nominated Fitness Zone as the official health partner for their Run Exercise and Cycle For Health (REACH) event. The event will be held at the old Airport Road on October 27, in conjunction with World Water Day, as a means to improve water conservation in the country by raising awareness.

The announcement was made during a press conference held yesterday at the Palm Cafe, Kiulap.

Prior to the actual date of the event, Fitness Zone will organise a health check and seminar for all the participants of JKR REACH 2013, that will take place on October 18 and 19, at the Fitness Zone Multi-purpose Hall in Kiulap.

Rachael Lee, the Fitness Manager of Fitness Zone, said that the participants will be encouraged to go through a health check that will examine and ensure their wellness and health by monitoring the percentage of body fat, muscle mass, blood pressure and other markers.

“The next day, the participants will receive an elaboration on their body analysis results and they will receive healthy nutritional tips from Fitness Zone’s very own certified nutritionist, Pearlie,” she continued.

Fitness Zone will also be conducting a warm-up session for the participants in the morning before the flag off. Participants of JKR REACH 2013 are also welcomed to visit Fitness Zone, as they are entitled to claim their three-day pass after the event.

Also present during the press conference was Athirah Yussof, the Public Relations Officer of JKR, who announced that to serve the purpose of the event, which is to conserve water, there will be no water receiving points during the run.

“We are trying to educate the public not to waste water but of course, we will be serving them water and isotonic drinks before and after the event,” she said.

She also stated that there will be a special appearance made by the Brunei Photographic Society who will be taking photos of the event and then uploading it to different social medias such as Facebook and Instagram.

“One of our local artiste and a four-time Hollywood Gold medallist, Fakhrul Razi will also be there to host the event which will entertain everyone,” she continued, “Let’s not forget that the participants of JKR REACH 2013 are also entitled to win great prizes.”

The charity event will involve a 2.5km fun run, a 5km competitive run and a 35km cycling route. Cash prizes and trophies for the 5km competitive run include $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place.

For the lucky draw prizes, Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) has sponsored a return ticket to Jakarta and a return ticket to Kuala Lumpur, while Fitness Zone will be giving away a six-month membership and five participants will also get the chance to win a one-month membership (for two persons).

There are other prizes up for grabs such as an iPad Mini, a Samsung Galaxy Tab just to name a few.

All participants for the three categories are entitled to a t-shirt and a medal when they cross the finishing line.

For those who are interested, the registration fees for the 2.5km fun run is $20, while the 5km competitive run and 35km cycling route is $25. Open to all ages, registrations for the JKR REACH will close on October 3 at 4.30pm.

Registration forms can be downloaded online via the official website at www.jkr-reach2013.com.

Alternatively, registration forms can also be obtained from the registration counter located at the ground floor lobby of the JKR headquarters building, any reception counter of JKR Departments’ main offices and Triple Star in Kiulap.

Golden registration numbers for bibs will also be made available to participants at an extra cost of $10 for single and double digit numbers and an extra $5 for 3-digit bibs onwards.

For those who are planning to participate, head over to the registration counters today from 8.30am until 11.30am and 2pm to 4pm at the main JKR headquarters and for those who residing in the Belait district, JKR will open a registration counter at their Belait branch for today only, starting at 9am until 4pm.

On Sunday, the registration counter will open at 8am to 4pm. The registration counters will run from September 30 until October 3, and open from 8am to 11.30am, 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm.

Participants are requested to fill out the quiz questions and suggest an idea for conserving water in their registration forms. The best idea on how to conserve water will be announced and be awarded with a prize on the day of the charity event.

All proceeds from JKR REACH 2013 will be contributed to four beneficiaries, which are Pusat Ehsan, Society for the Management of Autism-Related issues in Training (SMARTER), Education and Resources , Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphans and Care and Action for Strays (CAS).

Latest Les Mills programmes coming soon to Fitness Zone

25 Sep

FITNESS Zone is currently providing eight out of 13 Les Mills programmes to their members and soon, one of the latest programmes namely Grit Strength will be added to the list to make it nine.

Fitness Zone has also announced that towards the end of the year, three initial training modules – RPMTM, BODYPUMP® and GRITTM Strength – will be coming to Brunei and conducted at their branches.

RPMTM involves indoor cycling routine workouts where members can ride to the rhythm of powerful music. A team coach will lead the members through hills, flats, time trials and interval training.

The second module, BODYPUMP® is the original barbell class that strengthens the entire body. This 60-minute workout challenges all major muscle groups by using the best weight-room exercises like Squats, Presses, Lifts and Curls.

The third module, GRITTM Strength is a 30-minute high intensity interval training workout that takes members in to overdrive to go hard, push harder and get fitter as well as super fast. The short sharp demanding exercises combine weightlifting, running and plyometrics for a full body workout that increases aerobic capacity, strength, muscular endurance, metabolism and power.

Fitness Zone Studio allows its members to fully experience Les Mills classes as one of the very few health clubs in Brunei to be licensed and associated with Les Mills with nine of their programmes.

For non-members, they can walk into the gym at $20 to experience these classes and also the gym equipment.

For those who are interested in the above three trainings, they can contact Rachael (Fitness Zone Fitness Manager) for more information.

Les Mills International is a New Zealand company that is the world’s largest provider of choreo-graphed exercise-to-music group fitness clas-ses distributed to health clubs. The first Les Mills programme was BodyStep, with BodyPump being the first programme released internationally.

THE sound of a basketball being dribbled across the floor echoes through the hall, as players on the sidelines keep score. At the other side of the hall, a family enjoys an early game of badminton. This is often the scene at Fitness Zone Kiulap’s multi-purpose hall.

The hall is spacious enough to suit a multitude of sports, like basketball, futsal, badminton, and even dodgeball.

“We regularly receive bookings from private companies, and even families, who wish to hold mini tournaments or corporate sports activities,” said Nurul Ain, one of the many helpful employees at Fitness Zone.

“Our multi-purpose hall is almost always fully booked during the weekend.”

For those wishing to use the hall to play badminton, Fitness Zone charges a rate of $8 an hour or $21 for three hours.

There is also an option to only use half of the hall often during games of pick-up basketball where rates are $20 an hour or $50 for three hours.

To use the entire multi-purpose hall, the price is $40 for an hour and $100 for three hours.

The rates mentioned are for non-members during off-peak hours, however, Fitness Zone also offers special corporate rates and member rates, and different rates for peak hours.

Md Aizuddin Metusin, a 23-year-old currently pursuing his Masters at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) said, “We play once or twice a week and it is something we look forward to. We play ball, meet new people and sweat it out.”

Aizuddin shared that he and his friends often book a spot to use the half-court at Fitness Zone and then share the cost amongst them.
