THE Elderly Activity Centre has received a donation of exercise equipment which is aimed at encouraging the elderly to carry out an active lifestyle.

The exercise equipment items were placed in the exercise room of the Elderly Activity Centre and it included a secondhand stationary bike, two stability balls, 2 exercise mats and a body fat analyser all of which were donated by Fitness Zone. Present at the donation handover ceremony were the Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman who received the equipment from the Managing Director of Fitness Zone, Chun Goh, or more popularly known as Wu Chun.

The purpose of the donation was to cultivate an active lifestyle amongst the elderly people who visit the centre and to encourage more assistance from the private sector to help the centre flourish. With the equipment, it is hoped that the donation would also encourage private individuals to volunteer in taking care of the elderly to live an enriched life.

The handover ceremony began with a recital of the Surah al-Fatihah which was then followed by the officiation of the exercise room with the new addition of their equipment. After Datin Hjh Adina cut the ribbon marking the officiation of the room, the Deputy Minister along with Wu Chun sprinkled bunga rampai scented water over the equipment and proceeded to test out the exercise machines.

Wu Chun then provided a brief demonstration to the elderly in attendance on how to properly use the stability balls and explanations on the other available equipment.

They then proceeded outside to participate in a group tai chi exercise session led by trainers from Fitness Zone

The Elderly Activity Centre is located besides the Lambak Kanan Community Hall and is eligible for those aged 60 years old and above.

The $73,068-centre is equipped with two activity rooms, a multi-purpose room, a kitchen, a place for ablutions and a therapeutic garden. It is run by non-governmental organisations and volunteers. — Nabilah Haris

THE successful relaunching week of Fitness Zone’s Les Mills programme came to an end yesterday at the Fitness Zone’s Kiulap branch.

The closing ceremony commenced with an awareness session presented by Miss Lily who welcomed members of the public to join her in supporting organic products.

She gave a brief introduction on the recently established non-profit group supporting organic foods called Healthy Organic People and Environment (HOPE). The mission of the group is to create awareness and promote the importance of healthier eating by encouraging its members to grow their own organic vegetables thus making their own natural food as much as possible.

“As we are aware, the majority of commercial products are not only processed with chemical preservatives and colouring but also contain toxic substances such as pesticides, artificial hormones and genetically modified organisms. Such substances have been proven to cause many illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and heart attacks, which are the top three leading causes of death in Brunei. By changing our diet to natural, chemical-free, organic food, we not only reduce our risks of these diseases but we also tend to look and feel better about ourselves,” she said.

She said members of the public are welcomed to support and join the group which can be contacted via the Facebook page HOPE (Healthy Organic People and Environment) or telephone number 8869084.

The closing ceremony continued with the Body Jam session which saw more than 50 participants joining in the fun yet energetic moves led by the instructors from Fitness Zone.
