KFC and Fitness Zone are continuing their push in the ‘Hopes in the Hoop’ programme.

The team made their second stop of their school tour at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School yesterday to continue promoting the upcoming KFC Fitness Zone 3-on-3 Basketball Challenge.

Jonathan Bong, Senior Marketing manager of KFC, is dreaming big and wants to see the Sultanate make its presence felt at the Olympics.

“Imagine that one day we will be able to hear our national anthem being played and see our flag being raised during the Olympics because we won a gold medal competing in the 3-on-3 basketball event,” said Bong, after the national anthem was sung in conjunction with the celebration of Brunei’s 29th National Day today.

Wu Chun, managing director of Fitness Zone, is looking to bring his experience to the competition from catching the NBA All-Star Game last weekend in Houston, United States.

“It was a good experience for me as we want to bring some of the things that I saw at the NBA into our own 3-on-3 tournament,” said Wu Chun.

“Last year when we organised the first basketball tournament inside a shopping mall we had players telling us that they love our tournament because it is different,” added Bong.

“They like the surreal feeling of playing in the NBA because it makes them feel like a real pro,” continued Bong.

The basketball clinic was headed by ex-PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) player, Erwin Velez, and assisted by Jacky Yong Kui Seng.

Meanwhile, registration for the first leg of the KFC Fitness Zone 3-on-3 Basketball Challenge to be held from March 24-31 is already open.

There will be three categories contested; open, student and the newly introduced ladies categories.

Entry fee is set at $240 for the open category while the student and ladies categories are priced at $200.

Participating teams will also receive limited edition reversible jerseys to be worn during the tournament proper.

Closing date is on March 10 but organisers are encouraging interested parties to sign up earlier to avoid disappointment should there be too many teams.

Apart from the one-on-one challenge, slam dunk competition and three-point shootout, a skills challenge is also set to be introduced.

Entry forms will be available at all Fitness Zone outlets and at four KFC outlets – Gadong Central, The Mall, Airport Mall and Seria.

HER name is Lyza Colina Pacheco, fondly known as Lyza, and she was one of the pioneer members of the Fitness Instructor Team and was a Fitness Instructor at Fitness Zone for more than eight years. She also has cancer.

Fitness Zone will be holding a Charity Aerobics Marathon for Lyza who was a member and a driving force behind Fitness Zone’s team. Fitness Manager at Fitness Zone David Geo Sasis said to The Brunei Times that Lyza will undergo chemotherapy “in a few months time”.

Lyza was detected as breast cancer patient and now she is on the stage of recovery. However, she has an enlarging tumour in her brain she needs to have an operation as soon as possible.

“The doctors are preparing her for this event to happen. She has been advised to save and look for money accumulating P500,000 or $15,000 for the said treatment,” he added.

“We are conducting five different programmes on that event, starting up with Zumba, freestyle dance steps created for fun and enjoyment; Les Mills Programmes such as Body Attack, designed for athletic people and easy to follow movements that can burn 700 to 1,000 calories; Body Combat that unleashes the inner warrior in you, a combination of mixed martial arts from capioera, muay thai, taekwondo, karate and boxing; Body Jam and Sh’Bam, the latest dance sensation around the world that plays top billboard chart music with dance steps that challenges you,” said Sasis of the activities for the Charity Aerobic Marathon.

The event will be held at Fitness Zone in Kiulap on February 23 from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. The three-hour event has no registration fee but there will be an open charity box where participants can put in their donations for Lyza.

“Fitness Zone has been known to Brunei as a club that works. We don’t only change lives of our clients but we have a commitment to serve the people of Brunei by doing charity works and Outreach Programmes. Our Managing Director Wu Chun has been committed to these kind of values that is to share something from what you have and making other people smile always brings him happiness,” added Sasis.

“It is just right for us as her co-instructors to give help as we consider her as one of our family members and like an older sister,” he said.

According to Sasis, Lyza had served as an inspiration to all her colleagues because of her passion in dancing. She inspired a lot of clients and she taught them well in this life changing experience. “As she said, ‘I only have one life and I still have a small daughter to share this passion’,” quoted Sasis.

Fitness Zone brings festive cheer to 100 orphans

9 Feb

AS THE Chinese community the world over prepares to celebrate Chinese New Year tomorrow, many celebrants are tied down with preparations in anticipation of the arrival of the Year of the Snake.

On the eve of the auspicious event, celebrants both young and old gather around for a great meal and to watch the celebrations unfold on the television, in what is traditionally a family get-together.

However, there is a small section of children who are left behind, feeling little or no positive difference to their daily struggle. Hence, in the run-up to the festivities, Fitness Zone organised its ‘Love Without Boundaries Campaign,’ giving away New Year’s gifts to 100 orphaned children at its Kiulap branch.

Present as guest of honour to witness the campaign was Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Hajah Adina binti Othman. Also present were KFC B Sdn Bhd Senior Marketing Manager Jonathan Bong and Mum’s Bakery representative Ho Poh San.

“My late mother influenced me tremendously towards charity involvement and I now find it the greatest joy to make someone’s day brighter. I want to show these orphans or single-parent children like me that someone really cares about them. I am also thankful to my good friends, KFC and Mum’s Bakery, for joining me on board to support this heart-warming event,” said Fitness Zone founder Wu Chun.

KFC and Mum’s Bakery have thrown their support behind the campaign by providing the children with KFC vouchers and refreshments, while Mum’s Bakery gave away Chinese New Year biscuits.

Fitness Zone also expressed its utmost gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, as well as the Community Development Department (JAPEM) for their support. Additionally, a life-time Fitness Zone membership was presented to Datin Paduka Hajah Adina.

“Datin Adina has always been so passionate when it comes to charity projects. Her contribution to society always amazes me,” Wu Chun said.

This year, to honour these 100 children and make a difference to their lives, Fitness Zone is organising a fun and healthy group exercise session consisting of dance and fitness workouts.

“We have never met these children but we would like them to know that love is without boundaries. A portion of the Fitness Zone income has always been set aside for charity projects so Fitness Zone will consistently be able to do its part in helping others and in making a difference,” Wu Chun explained.

Aside from handing out red packets, Fitness Zone also gave away a one-year membership to all the children.

“I want these children to know that they are never lonely and they can always come to their second home, Fitness Zone, not only to enjoy all the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, but to make friends with all our kind-hearted members,” Wu Chun shared.
